Phil Frederick - Saturday, September 4
In the 1920's and 1930's, John & Stella Frederick raised 4 boys &, 2
girls. Phil was the 4th boy, and graduated from Manito High School with
a athletic award in 1946.
At various earlier stages of life, he sold popcorn on Main Street to
farm families on Saturday night, mowed grass in the "now" Veterans Park
and cemetery, worked part time at Caterpillar, started a summer baseball
team after WW II, while hand milking 2 cows twice a day.
In 1946, Phil attended Engineering School at Bradley University for 2
years while continuing part time employment at Caterpillar. He
transferred to the University of Illinois for the next 2 years to attain
a B.S. Degree in Metallurgical Engineering. During the Korean War, Phil
spent 3 years in the U.S. Air Force. Air sickness negated his success in
becoming a pilot, which resulted in Phil’s assignment to Wright
Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio to research materials for
military aircraft. He joined Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. in Albany, NY
in 1953 to develop, manufacture, and process Specialty Steel products
for various market products including military and commercial jet
engines. After 32 years in the steel industry, Phil retired as Sales
Vice President from Altech Specialty Steel Corporation. He came out of
retirement and enjoyed an additional 22 years as President/Owner of
Window Tech Systems, a window manufacturing company in Saratoga Springs,
New York. In 2009 Phil sold the window company, retired again and
returned to Manito to build a Log Cabin and reconnect with family &
friends.
